[ in truth, sam's been worrying that she both hasn't been doing enough to help tara adjust and about crowding her. there's also still that old instinct that being close would be doing her more harm than good, as much as she loves her and as much as she's missed her. but she's not about to let tara's birthday go by without celebrating it. ]

[ She knows Sam would throw her a big dinner party if she asked. She would jump for as many hoops as she needed to in order to fill the room, too. Normally Tara would be delighted to have someone do all that for her, but not Sam. She has asked enough of her, in a way. ]
i miss your casserole, been trying to imitate it but i can never get it quite right
[ she's a little surprised at the request tara makes for her dinner, and more than a little touched. she hadn't figured on that being a dish tara would miss enough to request, let along try making on her own. ]
i can do that, yeah. we'll make it nice. hit up the blockbuster, the holiday market, whatever you want to do.
[ It's the simple, small things. The taste of family, she would say. The pull of mundane, boring days that pass you by and you often forget about until it's too late. If Tara can hold to at least one, she would make it a selfish request. ]

[ she can understand that, honestly. she'd thought about it a lot when she'd been gone, though her memories had been mostly centered around missing tara and trying to keep her unaware of her mother's more selfish, self-destructive tendencies. but there were still times earlier on where they felt closer to a family, when their grandmother had still been alive and their dad had still been in the picture and both had tried to keep up with traditions. ]
